Vertical labelling - Rotery machine

Vertical labelling rotery machines are mostly found at distillers and breweries (beerindustry). These machines usually use waterbased casein adhesives. Typical production speeds are from 10.000 until 80.000 bottles per hour. Typical substrate: bottle of glass. The labelling technique is described below:

  • A thin film of adhesive is being applied on the vertical roller
  • The adhesive is being taken over to "pallets", that are rotating
  • The "pallets" are sticky and take a label from the label magazine.
  • Other "pallets" with little "fingers" do take over the label. The label is being turned (backward-forward)
  • The label is being applied on the bottle. While the bottle is rotating with the machine.

To ensure production speed as high as possible you need:

  • A strong wettack
  • No spatting, splashes or spurts
  • A stable rolling adhesive

Most common product: Intercol CAS 300

Vertical Labelling - Linear machine

These machines are often used in the food industry because they can handle diverse products and these machines are relatively easy in use. The maximum capacity of these machines will be around 30.000 products per hour. Most packaging forms can be labelled with these machines; pots, bottles (plastic and glass), cans etc.. All machines work with waterbased adhesives. The labelling technique is rather simple:

  • A thin film of adhesive is being applied on the vertical roller
  • The roller picks up a label from the magazine
  • The label is being teared of the roller by needles (mostly in combination with grooves in the roller)
  • By perfect timing the product (mostly round) will bel labelled.

To ensure a stable production you want the adhesive to have:

  • A perfect tack, enough to transport the label, not to much while you could damage the label with tearing it of the roller.
  • A good flow over the roller, while piling up can smear your machineparts.

Mostly used products:

  • Glass:Intercol VA 102/E80
  • Plastics: Intercol AA 570
  • Tin cans : Intercol AA 578

Vertical labelling- Pick-up and glue lap rotary machine

The application technique of these machines is considered as the modern way to label in the food industry. Mostly these machines are restricted to label round products only. Typical machine speeds are about 40.000 products per hour. Mostly a hot melt system is used for the pick-up as well for the glue lap application. We are explaining the labelling technique here below using tin cans as example:

  • The hot melt is being applied on a vertical roller and is taken over by a shaped roller
  • The shaped roller applies adhesive to the can
  • The sticky parts on the can tear one of the labels out of the labelmagazine
  • By rotating and guidance with brushers the label is being wrapped around the can
  • The applied label is being glued on the glue lap on the second glue station.
  • The label is being pressed on the gluelap.

Typical requirements for the hot melt

  • High hot tack at the moment of pick up
  • Good flow so you can apply very thin.
  • No smearing and making wires
  • No splashing
  • No residual tack

There are new systems in the market that replace rollers by spray nozzles!

Horizontal labelling - Roller coating

Most roller coating labellers are made for manual purposes. The labelling is more likely to be laminating. There are some exceptions on highly sophisticated machines where a horizontal labelling unit is being placed inline. The technique:

  • A horizontal roller lies in a reservoir filled with adhesive
  • The label is being offered to the roller from a label magazine
  • The label is being teared of the roller by needles and grooves.
  • The label is placed on the product directly after it gets from the roller.

The adhesive must have:

  • The right wettack for the entirely process
  • Non splashing
  • Stable with rolling on the roller.

Most commonly usedn product: Intercol DE 664

Horizontal labelling - pickup and gluelap

Most machines using this technique are commonly quite a few years old. These machines are hard to use with other formats then they are initially build for. These machines are only seen in the can labelling industries and have a quite high production speed up to 30.000 products per hour. The labelling technique:

  • A can comes through a feeder to the first gluestation
  • In the gluestation a shaped wheel applies adhesive to the can.
  • The can exactly makes one turnover and picks up a label from the magazine
  • The label wraps around the can by the rolling of the can
  • The gluelap on the labe has been applied with adhesive already in the label magazine and bonds the gluelap
  • :
Critical adhesive issues:
  • No smearing
  • Good tack
  • Good melting rate of the hot melts, not to large packaging.
  • Glue lap adhesive: good bond on versatile substrates, long open time, reasonable wettack.
